Bode always hated district 8. It was cold, gray, dull, and the whole atmosphere seemed to give out a stench of death and despair. Deserted. Not even the grass grew there anymore, so how could she be able to? She was desperate to get out of there. To find a life that included more than school and work.
In comparison, the life of the capitol she saw at the TV screen seemed wonderful. The colors and the feasts. The clothing and the hairstyles. The luxury and the grace. It was all so beautiful. So much different from her own home. Everyone had a new hair color, colors she'd never seen in real life, and they all looked so happy, full, pleased... She found herself day dreaming about the capitol and looking forward to every new broadcast when she could be a part of their world for a few moments. A world where you never had to work for anything, things simply came to you from the districts and you were free to do what you liked everyday. On top of that, the people in the capitol never had to go through the fear of the reapings every year. They didn't have to suffer to get by.
Her family was far from rich, but who was these days? She and her sisters had all signed up for tessera the day they turned twelve. They lived in a run down tenement and Bode, her parents, her younger and older sister, and grandfather all slept in the same room. Everyday after she'd finished school she and her sisters would join her parents at the factory, sewing peacekeeper uniforms until dark told them it was time to go home. Despite what one might expect of a family who lives so tightly together, Bode isn't especially close to either her sisters or the rest of her family. They do get along most of the time, but at the end of the day, she is sick of having them so close to her all the time.
Bode's teachers, and her family too for that matter, would always call her a strange child. She had her head up in the clouds and always appeared to be in an other world, out of touch with reality. As a child, she would make up stories that she presented as the truth, to make her life seem brighter and more exciting. She'd been chastised too many times though and her sisters had laughed at her, calling it lies and silliness, so now she simply keeps her stories as day dreams to think of whenever she finds life too boring or miserable.
Bode probably wouldn't win any competitions in physical strength and her muscles are rather weak, but she is a fast runner and has great flexibility. Most of the time, she'll sit still or walk around aimlessly through the town, but whenever she has to, she'll dart off, finding her own way through the surroundings. She also has an irrational fear of animals. All of them. Snakes, bugs, birds, mammals, fishes... On the plate, cut into pieces and you can't tell what they used to look like, they're fine. But other than that, she'll definitely keep her distance.
