DISTRICT 5 REAPINGS Kimmy Souza kept a big smile on her red lips as she neared the District 5 stage to announce this years Hunger Games. Her tall silver hair and glittery cheeks shinned in the dim light the sun gave the district that thrilling day. Obviously she didn't like the district all too much. The only way to really get a change in your district is to be absolutely darling and just plain perfect. This hadn't been the easiest for Kimmy, she had been here for as long as she can remember, and nothing has changed. She could only hope this time the district had the odds in their favor. It had helped having more victors behind your district.
Taking a confident stand up onto the stage in front of the silent district, Kimmy planted a smirk onto her face. She checked the microphone by speaking loudly, “Hello? Hello? Ah, welcome all and Happy Hunger Games!” She kept her voice full of enthusiasm through the appearance of her dark circled eyes. “It is now the time for this years tributes to take a brave stand in our Annual Hunger Games. One lucky young man and woman will be chosen today! Now, keep your ears open.”
Kimmy embraced the silence a moment before reaching her pale white hand into the clear glass bowl of thousands of slips of paper. Her fingers graced one and grabbed it out with a quick swipe. She looked over the slip and spoke in her inherited Capitol accent.
“Ariella Reese.”
Waiting only a moment to watch as the young woman made her way to the stage, Kimmy smiled and spoke once more. “Congratulations!” Kimmy made her way to the other clear glass bowl, circling her hand in to find a slip. She swiped it out quick and sauntered over to announce the neatly printed name on the slip.
“Samuel O'Malley.”

Annabeth, my little five-year-old sister came barging through my door, flipping the light switch on and jumping on top of my sleeping body, startling me awake. "Ari! Ari wake up!" her high-pitched voice was loud and excited. I groaned, somewhat pushing her off my body so I could breathe again.
"Why? It's too early, Annabeth. Go back to bed," I said as I tried pulling my quilts over my head. Her tiny little hands were quick, though, grabbing the sheets and pulling the entire ensemble off my body. Instinctively, I curled up into a little ball, trying to get warm.
"Ari, it's Reaping Day! You're name's gonna get called, come on!" she called, sitting straight on my diaphragm, blowing the air out of my lungs. My eyes shot open. Reaping Day. The Hunger Games. I could feel everything in my body go cold, almost momentarily. For some reason, a lot of the people in District Five-- my District, liked going into the Games. Wanting to be chosen, to me, is like wanting to commit suicide. The Games is suicide.
"Annabeth, I'm not going to get called. Another girl is going to get called, and I'm going to come back home with you," I said, sitting up. I pushed the brown hair away from her face and gave her a half-hearted smile. She had nothing to worry about; she didn't have a chance to get called on. She was only five. Whereas I was fifteen. You are eligible once you turn twelve until you turn eighteen. I'm in that range.
I got out of my bed reluctantly as Annabeth left my room. I shut the door behind her and stripped out of my pajamas. I slipped on a yellow dress that ended just above my knees. It covered my chest; I wasn't the type to show off my skin like a lot of other girls liked to do. I brushed my hair out, letting it fall in it's natural curls. I applied a little eyeliner and mascara, seeing as they made my brown eyes pop.
Once I arrived in the Square, I got in line with the rest of the fifteen-year-old girls. There were many teenagers here, all nervous and anxious about the Reaping. I, for one, was scared. Somehow, I felt like I was going to be the female tribute representing my District. I could feel it deep in the pit of my stomach.
Our Escort, Kimmy Souza stepped on the stage with a smile on her big red lips. Her silver hair and shiny cheeks definitely stood out. I rolled my eyes at her. I thought the Capitol was so annoying with their ridiculous costumes and accents.
“Hello? Hello? Ah, welcome all and Happy Hunger Games! It is now the time for this year’s tributes to take a brave stand in our Annual Hunger Games. One lucky young man and woman will be chosen today! Now, keep your ears open.” Kimmy squeaked as she stepped over to the glass balls. The crowd hushed to not even a whisper as she pushed a hand into the glass ball of the females. I felt my heart pounding as she pulled a slip of paper out and smoothed it. “Ariella Reese.”
Everything in my body went numb as my mind wandered to the conversation my sister and I had this morning. “Your name’s gonna get called, come on!” How could little Annabeth possibly have known that? I pondered this as I walked up to the stage with my hands balled at my sides. No crying, I told myself. You can’t look stupid in front of the cameras. I could barely hear that rotten old woman give me my congrats. Congrats? Congrats to what? My death? This woman just announced my future.
No.
I could not die.
I will win this. I will win this for Annabeth. She needed me.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

The early morning sun shone into his bedroom though Sam didn’t really want to get up, he pretty much wanted to fall back to sleep and skip this day altogether but that wasn’t going to happen the peacekeepers would come and drag him here. Deciding that now was a good time as any to get up Sam climbed out and put some cloths on, anything really since he would dress nice for the reaping. Sam wondered who was going to get picked though he guessed that he would find out this afternoon. Every year he watched the names be called out and every year he was relieved that his name wasn’t picked. It meant that another year to stay alive.
When it was almost time Sam got ready, his parents were waiting for him downstairs for their traditional meal before the reaping’s. The mood in the house wasn’t lively but the family still talked about normal things and not what was going to happen today. The O’Malley family all walked to the town square together, Sam then made his way to the seventeen year old boy’s section and waited. The girls were always picked first, he waited to see which one would be picked. Sam turned his attention back to Kimmy whom he disliked from the very moment he saw the woman. Sam just stood there in silence with all the other people.
Sam didn’t recognize the girls name that was called out nor did he know her face when he saw her. Now came the boys turn. Sam watched as KImmy read out the name, his name. Sam just stood there in silence, he could hear his mother shouting and when he turned to look he saw his father trying to calm his mother and holding onto to her so she wouldn’t rush in. Sam just watched on as the people in front of him made a line so he could walk towards the stage. Sam had nothing to say when he reached the stage, nothing came to mind. Sam had to fight now, it was kill or be killed.
