I look around at the crowd around me. Should I...? Then I finally yell, "I volunteer!" My mother repeatedly says no and I try to loosen her grip on me. She starts sobbing hysterically as I shove through the crowd toward the stage. Everyone stares at me, some surprised and some expecting. I step up to the stage to say once again, "I volunteer."
