Ayelen is the middle child of 5 children. When she was 7, her father left the house one day and never returned. Two years after, her mother became very ill and passed away, leaving the five children in the care of their uncle who wasn’t the most reliable of guardians. When Ayelen’s sister finally turned 19, she took over as head of the family and worked hard to keep the family afloat, working originally at the packaging plants and then eventually managing to get a job for one of the seamstresses in town.
Ayelen and Theo always had each other’s back when times were tough. They knew how hard it was for Briar to keep the family from starving or being sent to the orphanages, so when they were both of age, they’d take up extra tesserae, work odd jobs for some of the local stores and farms when they could, and go out into the wilderness when no one was around and hunt. Before Ayelen’s father left, he taught both Theo and Ayelen a few basic snares and traps to catch animals, which kept food on the table when they were about to go hungry. The two became surprisingly good at trapping and hunting, yet were unable to get any official hunting jobs, probably due to their age. Oh, but they still loved the outdoors and always had each other’s backs. When Theo was 14, he managed a proper job, working in the fields, harvesting the grain. This meant that Ayelen had to start learning to hunt on her own, which she quickly did. She became very quick on learning to analyze and improvise under important situations.
As Ayelen became older, she managed a little part-time job at a smaller wheat farm for an elderly lady whose husband had passed away. She would chop wood for her for the winters, get rid of pesky creatures that were ruining the crops. The old woman would ask her for other things as well. Hunt and gather things in the woods nearby without others knowing. Probably not very legal, but the old woman paid her rather well for it.
One thing that always scared Ayelen was the Reapings. Despite her enjoyment for hunting, she never really considered herself to be a violent person. She would have panic attacks the nights before, but every year she’d turn up lucky. However, despite the fear, she knew that if the day were to ever come, she’d have to be able to take control and just deal with it, especially with the amount of names increased every year between her and her brother. Because of this, whenever the Hunger Games would come along, she and her brother would watch the games, not in disdain, not in excitement, but just analyzing how each person was, what the arenas were like, what they should do in each situation, which people would be best to form alliances with, etc. This didn’t put her heart at ease, but at least she felt that if she ever were to get picked for the Games, she’d at least be partially prepared.
